چکیده

Federal Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990 (CAAA) and the Energy Policy Act of 1992 (EPACT), together with other state regulations have encouraged or mandated transit systems to use alternative fuels to power bus fleets. Among such fuels, compressed natural gas (CNG) is attractive, although it must be stored in robust, heavy pressurized cylinders, capable of withstanding pressures up to 5,000 psi. Such systems are typically heavier than conventional diesel storage tanks. As a result, this raises gross vehicle weight, sometimes significantly, which then increases the consumption of the pavement over which CNG buses operate. Capital Metro, the Austin, Texas transit authority, is currently evaluating a number of CNG fueled buses. As part of the U.S. DOT Region Six University Transportation Centers Program (UTep), a study was instigated into the scale of incremental pavement consumption associated with the operation of these buses. The study suggests that replacing current vehicles with CNG powered models utilizing aluminum storage tanks would raise average network equivalent Single axle (ESAL) impacts by around six percent. This translates into an increase in total annual overlay rehabilitation costs across the network of over four percent. Finally, it recommends that a full cost study be undertaken with evaluating the adoption of alternative bus fuels which includes pavement and environmental impacts.

Theoretical study of the effect of hydrogen addition to natural gas-fueled direct-injection engines

The preparation of air–fuel mixture is considerably dependent on fluid flow dynamics to achieve improved performance, efficiency, and engine combustion in the appearance of flow. In this study, the effects of mixtures of hydrogen and compressed natural gas (CNG) on a spark ignition engine are numerically considered. This article presents the results of a direct-injection engine using methane–hy...

Experimental Study of Hydrogen Addition Impact on Emissions and Performance of a Natural Gas Fueled Engine

Hydrogen is seen as one of the important energy carriers of the future with potential to reduce local as well as global warming. The main by-product of the combustion of hydrogen in air is water vapor and trace quantities of oxides of nitrogen. An experiment was conducted to study the impact of hydrogen/natural gas blends on performance, thermodynamic efficiency and exhaust gas emissions in ...

A cost-benefit analysis of alternatively fueled buses with special considerations for V2G technology

Motivated by climate, health and economic considerations, alternatively-fueled bus fleets have emerged worldwide. Two popular alternatives are compressed natural gas (CNG) and electric vehicles. The latter provides the opportunity to generate revenue through vehicle-to-grid (V2G) services if properly equipped. This analysis conducts a robust accounting of the costs of diesel, CNG and battery-el...

Organic Gas Speciation Profiles for Running Exhaust of CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) Transit Buses Equipped with TWC (Three-Way Catalysts) — OG2403 & OG2404

Two organic gas speciation profiles (OG2403 and OG2404) for compressed natural gas (CNG) transit buses equipped with three-way catalysts (TWC) were developed in this work to complement the current CARB organic gas speciation profile database. The profiles were created based on chassis dynamometer test data of two transit buses equipped with TWCs running on CNG. Profile OG2403 was made for Stead...

Natural Gas Buses: Separating Myth from Fact

Increasing numbers of transit agencies across North America are making the choice to convert their bus fleets to compressed natural gas (CNG), and even more are seriously considering it. Natural gas buses now account for at least 20% of all new bus orders. However, it becomes difficult for fleet operators to fairly evaluate the potential benefits of an alternative fuel program if they are confr...
